Batros Coloured

Here's a fantastic image of Batros; highly smart villain from "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" cartoon by Filmation Studios.

Sadly he was never made as a figure back in the 80s but now Mattel is releasing him as a figure in their "Masters of the Universe Classics" line. :)

Dragon Blaster Skeletor by Axel Giménez

My first real attempt with multiple (colour) Copic Markers. :)

Pencils by: Axel Giménez
Inkes by: Diana Egea Conesa
Colours by: Jukka Issakainen

Check out Axel's fantastic artworks on his DeviantArt-page!

Had so much fun colouring Dragon Blaster Skeletor!
Spent some time trying to find good mix of blues and purples which took me quite some time as I was testing them for the first time ever.

Excuse the lack of colour on the chain and background. I felt that I might destroy the entire piece going there.

Decided to stop when I was happy with it. I call it a test-run and have gotten lot of good feedback from people.

Mai Shiranui Colored by Jukka

Just saw Spoony's review about King of Fighters movie and it was really enjoyable.
Go check out the video! :)

His quick rant about the potrayal of Mai Shiranui in the film reminded me of an artwork I coloured way back in the day...

Vegan CaveGirl in PULP Girls

Digging through some old stuff.

At one point, I coloured for Jason Martin's PULP Girls project (from SuperRealGraphics) some sequential pages of Boo's character Bramble as the Vegan CaveGirl in her first story.

The PULP Girls #1 was sold as SDCC Convention book in 2009 if memory doesn't fail me too much.

Vegan CaveGirl had action, blood, vampires and an elf.

The book had many stories, with different artists working on them. It was a fun book. :)

Here's the blurb about it:

In your face, fun, dangerous, colorful, short and sweet.
Pulp Girls is a collection of concepts - inspired from grindhouse cinema, pulp heroes and similar genre roots - in small cliffhanger style format, all with a female-centric twist.

GIRLS + WEAPONS x DANGER = PULP GIRLS
I had never worked on colouring blood, so finding bloodspatters was a task. Also the jungle-environment needed some extra care, because I tested different ways to give that texture to all the trees and bushes.
One of the suggestions I had for the pages, was that the story would take place right as the night was ending and morning would be rising soon.
Which resulted from my need to go nuts with colours, and what better way than to add a sunrise to the mix. ;)

He-Man Comic Colouring Assistance

My friends know that my dream came true as a He-Fan, when I got to voice King Miro for the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon from Mike Young Productions 2002-2004 (finnish dub).

Well I have been a big fan of the He-Man comic by MVCreations and was sad when the comic and toon ended.

A great opportunity came to me, when Val Staples, the writer/colourist of He-Man comic and onwer of MVCreations contacted me to do some colour assistance on a project called "Episode 40" which is the unproduced script from He-Man cartoon, as they were doing an comic-adaption of it to go as Special Feature to the He-Man DVD Volume 3 released on August 5th.

The Comic can be found as readable PDF on the DVDs Special Features, AND if you happen to buy the DVD from Best Buy store, there will be a Printed version of the comic packed with, which is SO AWESOME.

KIKSTART

A little story of Kikstart, the heroic side-kick character to Cougar (transforming robot not related to Transformers). Cougar will be adventuring in comics soon, with first script from the talented pen of Simon Furman.

This story is told from my own personal perspective and I admit not having all the information related, but this is what I was given to work with.

My good friend Boo (Boo's BLOG) was drawing models of new characters for Studio Cougar, and from what I gather these images below where the model-references given to him to build a character from.
You can see the two photos of actual product, to which character wanted to be based off, and Boo's sketches, that were approved. In the bottom-right corner is even an earlier head-version that got rejected.

Looking good so far dontcha think?

Boo drew the first version and it was sent to me to colour. I did not know at the time that also another colourist had been assigned to colour it too. I'm not even
quite sure if the other colour-version had been done long before I even started working on my version.
First version seen below is what I coloured accordingly to the model-photo I had been given and Boo was happy, as well as Studio Cougar too, initially.

Then the word came, that they wanted Boo to re-draw the front-part of Kikstart's armour and also the pelvis-area to better match the actual product, as the owner of the bike didn't like it enough.

So Boo re-drew the parts needed and added them to the drawing and I could easily make necessary changes to colours building on top of my earlier layers.
I was at this time shown Kikstart by another colourist Liam Shalloo and I was asked to make the hand-parts similar to his colour-choises, so I did.
I also was asked to add some graphics to Kikstart's helmet, based on couple photos I was provided, so I did that, eventhough I begged and pleaded Boo to draw them there, as I was only the colourist and wasn't sure my drawing on top of Boo's lines would do justice enough.

After all the needed changes Boo and I did, we were very pleased with ourselves that the character came around looking like the actual product in photos and we sent the final image to Studio Cougar where they liked our work.

However a month later I saw an Q&A of Simon Furman at Allspark-website, where they showed some of the villains that Cougar would be battling. They also showed Kikstart and it was the earlier version, with Liam's colours.

I was rather suprised by it, and when I asked why his version became the official one, I was told that in his image, were the sponsors logo "QUANTUM" on chest and feet. I had seen them in the small web-thumnail of Liam's coloured version that I received while still working on the adjustments to Kikstart and never could read them properly. I was also never asked to add the logo to Kikstart, which was also suprising, if that indeed was the biggest difference to make it official.

Heck I could have added the logo anytime they needed.

But they never asked.

Hope you enjoyed this little tale of high adventure.
